Understanding CTE: A Call to Action for Athletes and Parents

Updated: Nov 12, 2024

As the CEO of Empower Wellness Company, I feel compelled to address an increasingly urgent issue facing athletes at all levels: Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE). This degenerative brain disease, linked to repeated head trauma, is a growing concern in contact sports, particularly football.

Having played as a middle linebacker in high school and junior football, I am all too familiar with the physical demands and inherent risks of the game. I quickly accumulated a significant amount of trauma to my brain—much more than what is considered healthy. CTE is particularly insidious; it can only be diagnosed posthumously through an autopsy. Unfortunately, studies reveal alarming statistics: around 99% of NFL players who have undergone autopsy showed signs of CTE, and even high school athletes face a worrying risk. Research indicates that approximately 30% of players who participated in just four years of football exhibit signs of this debilitating condition. For many high school teams, that means nearly the entire starting roster is at risk.

These numbers should be a wake-up call for athletes, parents, coaches, and sports organizations. The question is: what can we do to mitigate this risk?

Educating Ourselves and Our Young Athletes

First and foremost, education is vital. Understanding the risks associated with head trauma can empower athletes to make informed decisions about their participation in contact sports. Coaches and parents should be proactive in teaching safe playing techniques, especially proper tackling form. Emphasizing the importance of leading with the shoulder and keeping the head out of the equation can significantly reduce the risk of injury.

Strengthening Supportive Muscles

In addition to proper technique, building strength and flexibility in the muscles surrounding the head, neck, and shoulders can act as a protective barrier. Incorporating exercises that strengthen these areas into training regimens can help athletes withstand the physical impacts that come with the sport.

Embracing a Culture of Safety

It’s crucial for sports organizations to foster a culture that prioritizes safety over the aggressive “win-at-all-costs” mentality. This means advocating for better protocols regarding concussion management, encouraging players to report symptoms, and creating an environment where it’s acceptable to prioritize health over competition.

A Collaborative Approach

Lastly, tackling the issue of CTE requires a collaborative effort from all stakeholders. Coaches, parents, medical professionals, and athletes must work together to create a safe sporting environment. Continuous research into CTE and brain health is vital, and sharing knowledge can lead to more effective preventive measures.

As we engage in this conversation, let’s remember that our athletes are not just players; they are individuals with futures ahead of them. By taking steps now to educate, strengthen, and protect, we can help safeguard their health and well-being for years to come.

At Empower Wellness Company, we believe in promoting a holistic approach to health and wellness. Let's work together to ensure that our young athletes not only excel in their sports but also thrive in their lives beyond the field. The road to change starts with awareness, and together, we can make a difference.
